Our Technology Development team  is a multidisciplinary group of engineers and researchers working together to create innovative and reliable geotechnical equipment  and specializing in the design and development of cutting-edge tools for subsurface exploration

SCOPE OF POSITION

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Technology Development Team in Burnaby, BC. This role will focus on hardware and firmware development, including PCB design, microcontroller integration, and sensor technology such as load cells and strain gauges. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering and a proven track record of designing ruggedized, field-ready electronics for challenging environments.

ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

  • Lead the design, development, and testing of electrical systems for geotechnical site investigation tools.
  • Design and develop PCBs for embedded systems, ensuring robustness in demanding field conditions.
  • Integrate and program microcontrollers for sensor data acquisition, communication, and control.
  • Work with load cells, strain gauges, and other sensor technologies to improve measurement accuracy and reliability.
  • Develop and optimize firmware (C, C++, Python) for embedded systems.
  • Implement and troubleshoot communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, Modbus, and CAN for device connectivity.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, and robotics engineers to develop fully integrated solutions.
  • Conduct prototyping, troubleshooting, and field testing to validate designs.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices for electrical safety and performance.
  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership to junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement within the team.

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer-In-Training in British Columbia (or eligible to register)


Experience &Technical  Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in electrical hardware and firmware development.
  • Strong expertise in PCB design and layout (Altium, Eagle, or similar tools).
  • Extensive experience with microcontroller-based embedded systems (STM32, PIC, ARM-based architectures, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of analog and digital circuit design for sensor integration.
  • Hands-on experience with load cells, strain gauges, and instrumentation circuits.
  • Proficiency in firmware development (C, C++, Python) for real-time embedded applications.
  • Required knowledge of communication protocols: SPI, I2C, UART, Modbus, and CAN.
  • Experience designing electronics for harsh environments (ruggedized and low-power designs) is an asset
