Senior Civil Engineer

Help shape the future of the UK's energy infrastructure.

At Kelvin Power, we're engineering a brighter tomorrow, and we're looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Civil Engineer to join our growing Civil and Structural Engineering team.

As part of the global VINCI Energies Group, Kelvin Power delivers specialist engineering consultancy and design solutions across major electricity transmission, substation and energy infrastructure projects throughout the UK and Ireland.

With an expanding portfolio of projects and continued investment in our engineering capabilities, this is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role in delivering technically challenging civil engineering solutions for major energy infrastructure developments.

You'll play a key role in leading engineering design, supporting project delivery and mentoring the next generation of engineers, while contributing to the continued growth and success of Kelvin Power.

The Role

As our Senior Civil Engineer, you'll take technical ownership of civil engineering design activities, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients and construction partners.

From initial concept through to detailed design and construction support, you'll help deliver innovative, practical and cost-effective solutions across complex, large-scale substation and infrastructure projects.

This role offers the opportunity to combine hands-on technical engineering with project leadership, people development and collaboration across a wide range of disciplines.

Key Responsibilities

Civil Engineering Design & Technical Leadership

  • Lead the design and delivery of civil engineering works associated with major substation and energy infrastructure projects.

  • Produce and review engineering calculations, technical specifications and detailed construction drawings.

  • Develop civil and structural engineering solutions covering earthworks, access roads, drainage systems, foundations, plant structures and associated infrastructure.

  • Design steel-framed and masonry buildings, water-retaining structures and other specialist civil engineering elements.

  • Deliver conceptual and detailed substation designs in accordance with client requirements, relevant standards and industry best practice.

  • Utilise engineering design and analysis software to develop technically robust, practical and cost-effective solutions.

  • Review and check technical deliverables, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, specifications and quality requirements.

Project Delivery & Collaboration

  • Take responsibility for the successful delivery of a portfolio of engineering projects, ensuring agreed programmes, budgets and quality standards are achieved.

  • Work collaboratively with electrical, structural, primary design and other engineering disciplines to deliver fully integrated project solutions.

  • Liaise with clients, contractors, suppliers and subcontractors throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Support procurement activities, including technical evaluations and subcontractor coordination.

  • Attend site visits, technical reviews and client meetings across the UK and Europe.

  • Identify opportunities to improve project efficiency, technical delivery and commercial performance.

  • Support the preparation of technical proposals, project estimates and tender submissions.

People Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring and support to junior engineers and technicians.

  • Contribute to the professional development of the wider Civil and Structural Engineering team.

  • Promote engineering excellence, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

  • Support the implementation of best practices, design procedures and quality assurance processes.

About You

We're looking for an experienced Civil Engineer who combines strong technical knowledge with excellent problem-solving skills, a collaborative approach and a passion for delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

You'll be comfortable taking ownership of complex engineering challenges while supporting the development of colleagues and maintaining strong relationships with clients and project teams.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years' post-graduate experience in civil engineering design.

  • A BSc, BEng or MSc in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.

  • Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards professional accreditation with ICE (MICE) or IStructE (MIStructE).

  • Experience delivering civil engineering design solutions for industrial, infrastructure or energy-related projects.

  • Strong technical understanding of earthworks, drainage, roads, foundations and associated civil engineering infrastructure.

  • Experience using engineering design and analysis software such as Autodesk Robot, Tekla Tedds, Civil 3D, MicroDrainage or InfoDrainage.

  • Knowledge of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and industry design requirements.

  • Proficiency in producing and reviewing construction-standard drawings using AutoCAD, Revit or Civil 3D.

  • Experience coordinating engineering deliverables across multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Excellent organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with colleagues, clients and external stakeholders.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous experience working on electricity substations, transmission networks or energy infrastructure projects.

  • Experience delivering civil engineering designs for large-scale infrastructure developments.

  • Knowledge of project management principles, commercial awareness and project budgeting.

  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or supporting technical team development.

  • Familiarity with construction processes, site coordination and contractor engagement.
