Position – Waste Engineering - Hazard Assessment Coordinator (Client Side) 
Location – UKAEA, Culham 
Travel – Required in the office 3 days per week and 2 days from home
Arrangement – Permanent

BPSS clearance will be required at basic level. Prior clearance will not be transferrable.

The role is required to manage the process of assessing worksites for asbestos, COSHH, beryllium, and radiological hazards during the discovery, pre-construction and construction phases. The role will act as the gatekeeper and focal point for hazard assessment by organising, planning, scheduling, coordinating, and collating survey findings into reports linked into decommissioning and waste handling, storage, and disposal activities providing traceability and assurance through the lifecycle. As a Monitored Radiation Worker (under IRR 2017), the role will work closely with Senior Authorised Persons, characterisation, radiological, asbestos and COSHH assessors.


KEY RESPONSABILITIES 

  • The person undertaking this role shall be responsible for:
  • Providing leadership and coordination for hazard assessment across the JET estate.
  • Specifying the outcomes and deliverables from the hazard assessment activity in each worksite (discrete building or area).
  • Lead development of an integrated Hazard Assessment Plan for each worksite.
  • Manage the acquisition of data by leading and coordinating survey teams.
  • Ensure appropriate guidance is implemented throughout the hazard assessment activity to meet site operating requirements.
  • Review and collate deliverables into a comprehensive hazard register.
  • Collaborate with Decommissioning and Waste Engineers to incorporate
    characterisation findings into risk-based decommissioning and waste management plans.
  • Ensure quality and consistency of delivery of the hazard assessment scope is compliant with site process, procedures and permit conditions.
  • Manage and mitigate risks and opportunities including emergency planning.
  • Manage delivery to key milestones and KPI’s to satisfactory closeout.
  • Promote the importance of hazard assessment to stakeholders and suppliers to secure engagement and collaboration, maximising value, opportunity and credibility throughout delivery.
  • Manage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Conducting weekly site safety audits and report findings to the Contract Manager

Qualifications

Degree in a relevant technical field, such as:

  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Environmental Science
  • Mechanical/Civil Engineering
  • Preferred Certifications:
  • Hazardous Waste Management
  • Project Management (e.g., PMP or APM)

Core Knowledge Areas

  • Radiological Protection & Monitoring (desirable but not essential)
  • Understanding of contamination control, dose assessment, and ALARP principles.
  • Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative risk analysis methods.
  • Regulatory Frameworks
  • Awareness of UK regulatory frameworks and standards.
  • Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017
  • Asbestos Regulations 2006
  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002
  • Dangerous Substances & Explosive Atmosphere Regulations 2002
  • Environmental Permitting Regulations (as amended)
  • Construction Design & Management Regulations 2015
  • Characterisation Techniques
  • Sampling, radiological surveys, and interpretation of analytical data.
  • Waste Management
  • Classification, handling, and disposal of radioactive and hazardous
    materials.
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Development of response plans for abnormal events.
  • cTechnical Skills


Proficiency in:

  • Risk Modelling (e.g., fault tree analysis, probabilistic safety assessment)
  • Data Management Systems for hazard and characterisation records.
  • Familiarity with project scheduling tools
