Project Description:
Two projects within the Fuel Integrity portfolio. Return of Failed Fuel: 1) assess active liquor in containers, 2) develop an effluent discharge philosophy, making use of existing routes within a plant, and 3) assess an existing flushing system for use with a new container type. Sampling: 1) assess existing sampling capability within three pond facilities, determine how it needs to be improved and design these improvements, 2) develop ways of identifying sources of activity release down to a single container within the pond.
These projects are in the Appraise and Select phase, with initial information gathering and assessment around existing feeds and plant. This will lead to development of options initially, followed by shortlisting, options development and eventually, selection of a single preferred solution.
Process deliverables include: basis of design, process description, flowsheet, supporting calculations, feed specification, sampling philosophy and underpinning, production of documentation to formalise these, flow diagrams, assessment and optioneering reports.
Role Description:
- Regular reporting on process team progress to Project Management and Engineering Manager.
- Working closely with a multi-discipline design team, including other engineering disciplines as well as non-engineering and non-design functions (Project Management, Programme Delivery, Technical Support Safety Assessors, Plant-Side Engineering, Plant Operations, Commissioning etc.)
- Information gathering about existing effluent routes and their capabilities/compatibilities. Engagement with effluent co-ordinators to identify safe discharge limits and agree required arrangements to be in place to allow discharges.
- Assessment of existing flushing system for use with a new container type, including pressure and flow characteristics. Identifying potential issues and identifying modifications where required, up to and including full replacement.
- Development of a range of sampling systems for bulk pond condition, individual container sampling, and an intermediate level to enable location of activity releases within a very large pond.
- Development of radiological, environmental and non-nuclear safety cases for relevant hazards. Working in a highly regulated environment with an emphasis on nuclear safety. Working within existing safety cases and ensuring that design fits within those requirements, and identifying if this is not achievable.
Essential Experience & Qualifications:
- Working with teams of process engineers, other engineering disciplines and non-engineering disciplines in delivering process designs on medium/large-scale projects.
- Good communication skills and ability to work with other team members / disciplines.
Competent report writing skills: clearly and concisely reporting findings.
Comfortable working under time and cost constraints. - Designing/assessing fluidic systems to transfer radioactive liquors and effluent streams.
- Feed liquor appraisal and definition of operating envelopes, with support from technical disciplines.
- Understanding of technologies to enable taking and handling of samples of hazardous liquids.
- Safety assessment techniques (e.g., HAZOP)
- Production and checking of: Basis of Design, Process Description, Feed and Effluent Descriptions, Process Calculations (fluidics), Process Data Sheets, Basis of Process Safety (BoPS)
- Masters/Batchelors Degree in Chemical Engineering.
