Civils Site Engineer

Civil Site Engineer

Reporting to: Civil Manager
Business Unit: MPN – Kintore


Purpose of the Position

The Site engineer is to be responsible for the technical aspects of the construction project. The role will be to ensure the technical competence of the final project output built to a quality standard set out in the inspection and test plans that the site engineer, will own and write.

Key Duties will include Setting out and checking quality of others setting out. Checking trade contractors output, surveys of structures, buildings and infrastructure. Installation of Primary and secondary controls used for setting out and surveying purposes essential.

Overseeing sub-contractors, managing site safety, liaising with stake holders. Ensuring project delivery meets relevant scopes of works, contract design and specifications and regulations.

A strong technical background is needed for this role with experience of problem solving, thinking on your feet, good communication skills along with a relevant civil engineering degree qualification.

The site engineer will have temporary works experience, particularly with being a temporary works coordinator. Experience with managing TW process to BS 5975, producing design briefs, owning and managing the temporary works schedule. Knowledge and experience of scaffolding, Cofferdams, drainage, open cut and supported systems, trench boxes. Chamber /Manhole boxes, Sheet piles and frames used in cofferdams and access track installation and maintenance. Experience in Structural RC works, drainage, highways, installation of EHV ducting is preferable but not essential (training provided)


Key Responsibilities

Technical Supervision

Ensure construction is installed and technically correct

Setting Out

Using a total Station primarily to set out and check the quality of engineering. Be able to use the total station to set up primary and secondary control with a range of fixed benchmarks and reflective targets, prisms and self-adhesive targets. Engineering surveying using equipment such as Leica, Topcon or Trimble for example. Experience with GPS will also be of benefit, but not relied upon as the main setting out tool. Be able to use an engineer’s level and staff to reduced level and undertake level surveys. Produce surveys and coordinates in X,Y, Z format on paper, digital and computer models.

Quality Control

Have engineering experience and knowledge to interpret drawings and specification and confirm works are installed to the inspection and test plan. To also have the strength of character to question contractors’ quality and to issue Non-conformance reports where standards do not meet the desired specifications.

Coordination

Liaise with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and local authorities, own team to ensure the works are compliant to specification and design.

Documentation and reporting

Maintain accurate project records, including drawings, reports, and site documentation.


Required skills and qualifications

  • Education: A degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Civil Engineering, Construction, or a related discipline is typically required.

  • Site Experience: Previous site engineering experience preferred on large scale civils infrastructure projects

  • Analytical and technical skills: Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities are essential. Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software, such as Autodesk, is also necessary.

  • Temporary Works Coordination: CITB TWC awareness course attendance, with at least 3 years temporary works coordinator experience.

  • Computer and IT Skills: Have the ability to use the software needed for uploading/Downloading data into the surveying equipment and be skilled in the use of AutoCAD software. Experience with Viewpoint for Projects, SharePoint, and the knowledge of Common Data environments, such as those found in ISO 19650 scheme, to ascertain design information.

  • Management abilities: Excellent project management, organizational, and team coordination skills are needed to manage deadlines and site teams.

  • Attention to detail: A methodical and accurate approach is critical to ensuring a project's quality and precision.

  • Communication: Effective written and oral communication skills are needed to liaise with diverse professionals and clients.

  • Commercial awareness: Understanding project budgets, estimating material and labour costs, and identifying cost-effective solutions are part of the role.

  • Physical fitness: The job involves spending significant time outdoors on construction sites in all weather conditions, which may require climbing or accessing hard-to-reach areas.

  • Environmental Awareness: Many works involve use of concrete, concrete washout being one element of consideration, engineers will be exposed to drainage, nesting birds, Bats and other flora and fauna. Sensitivity to these environments is critical.

  • Driving licence: This is a requirement for the role, as site engineers may need to travel between different sites or get to the project outside of the times most public transport doesn’t operate.

  • CSCS Card: A related discipline card either academically qualified person AQP card in civil engineering, or other related card.

Typical work environment

The role is split between a site office and the outdoor worksite, where engineers inspect progress, set out work, and provide supervision. The work can be physically demanding and involves regular travel. Working hours can extend beyond the typical 40 hour week to meet project deadlines.


Career progression

With experience, a Site Engineer can advance to a Senior Engineer, and from there, may move into management roles such as Site Manager, Project Manager or higher. Attaining chartered status from a professional body like the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is a preference but not critical to the role. A fully recognised CATS is available for engineers wishing to become incorporated or chartered.
