Automation System Engineer

About the Role

We are looking an experienced Automation System Engineer required to deliver ABB System 800xA, AC800M, SCADA/DCS, and Substation Automation projects from design and integration through FAT, commissioning, handover, and support. The role requires IEC 61850, industrial networking, redundancy, cybersecurity, virtualization, and brownfield migration expertise.

Key Responsibilities

· Design, configure, test, and commission ABB System 800xA, AC800M, S800 I/O, controllers, servers, networks, and redundant architectures.

· Develop control logic, interlocks, sequences, reusable libraries, I/O databases, backups, and engineering records.

· Develop operator displays, faceplates, alarms, events, trends, historian interfaces, access control, and High Performance HMI functions.

· Engineer SAS, electrical SCADA, and PMS; integrate IEDs, relays, meters, switchgear, generators, transformers, PLCs, RTUs, drives, gateways, and third-party systems.

· Perform IEC 61850 engineering including ICD/CID/SCD files, MMS, GOOSE, datasets, report control blocks, SOE, and NTP/PTP/IRIG-B time synchronization.

· Configure and troubleshoot IEC 101/104, DNP3, Modbus, Profinet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP, OPC, VLANs, fiber, PRP, HSR, MRP, RSTP, VPNs, and remote telemetry.

· Lead FAT, SAT, loop checks, commissioning, startup, migrations, shutdowns, cutovers, rollback, troubleshooting, and customer acceptance.

· Apply IEC 62443-aligned cybersecurity; support VMware/Hyper-V, backup, disaster recovery, licensing, lifecycle management, documentation, training, and warranty support.

Core Technical Skills

· ABB System 800xA, AC800M, Control Builder M, Engineering/Operations Workplace, S800 I/O, object types, aspect objects, faceplates, libraries, bulk engineering, diagnostics, upgrades, and backup/restore.

· IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-101/104, DNP3, Modbus TCP/RTU, Profinet, Profibus, EtherNet/IP, OPC, industrial networks, redundancy, and Wireshark diagnostics.

· IEC 62443 cybersecurity, VMware/Hyper-V, backup/disaster recovery, IEC 61131-3, ISA-18.2/IEC 62682, and relevant IEEE/client standards.

Preferred Exposure

SAS, protection relays, electrical SCADA, PMS, energy monitoring, IET600, PCM600, ABB Relion/AC500/drives, Siemens S7-1500, Rockwell ControlLogix, Moxa gateways, and RTUs.

Qualifications & Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, Electronics Engineering

· 5–8 years in industrial automation, SCADA/DCS, or substation automation, including at least 3 years with ABB 800xA and AC800M.

· End-to-end delivery of at least two ABB 800xA projects covering engineering, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and handover.

· Hands-on integration of IEDs, relays, PLCs, RTUs, and gateways using IEC 61850 and industrial protocols.

· Ability to independently lead testing, shutdowns, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer-facing activities.

· Proficiency with P&IDs, SLDs, control schematics, I/O lists, cable schedules, and network drawings.

Personal Attributes & Advantages

· Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, reporting, and customer-facing skills; able to work independently and meet deadlines.

· Willing to travel across UAE, GCC, and international project locations.

· UAE/GCC project experience, GCC driving licence (Preferable), ABB certification, and PMS/SAS, cybersecurity, or industrial networking experience are advantageous.
