Project Description:
Nuclear material is to be brought to Sellafield to be stored prior to eventual disposal. Storage of this material over the timescales considered presents several hazards around hydrogen and pyrophoric fire. A method of managing these hazards, taking account of future processing as well as storage, is to be developed.
This project is in the Appraise and Select phase, with a focus on identifying and developing the concept design of a single preferred solution. To achieve this, a shortlist of options needs to be developed to a point where meaningful optioneering can take place.
Process deliverables include: basis of process safety, supporting calculations, preliminary DSEAR assessment, piping and gas flow systems design, support to development of technical cases.
Role Description:
- Working closely with a multi-discipline design team, including other engineering disciplines as well as non-engineering and non-design functions (Project Management, Programme Delivery, Technical Support Safety Assessors, Plant-Side Engineering, Plant Operations, Commissioning etc.)
- Information gathering about chemical and physical behaviour of the nuclear material when in storage.
- Development of venting and purging systems (passive and active) to manage make-up of the atmosphere within the storage container.
- Development of a Basis of Process safety, defining how inherent, introduced and deferred hazards are to be managed.
- Appraisal of developed options in a formal optioneering exercise.
- Presentation of design at regular assurance reviews with process design intelligent customer, as well as at technical committee, management safety committee and others where required. Communicating design proposals to the customer, and working with them to achieve an acceptable solution.
Essential Experience & Qualifications:

- Good communication skills and ability to work with other team members / disciplines.
- Competent report writing skills: clearly and concisely reporting findings.
Comfortable working under time and cost constraints. - Designing compressible flow systems to manage radiologically and/or chemically hazardous gases.
- Production of hazard management strategy documents and assessment of relative risks to inform design decisions.
- Production of DSEAR assessments, preferably with experience in hydrogen management.
- Safety assessment techniques (e.g., HAZOP)
- Production and checking of: Basis of Design, Basis of Process Safety, Process Description, Process Calculations (fluidics)
- Masters/Batchelors Degree in Chemical Engineering.
