Estimator – EV Charging Infrastructure

The Estimator will play a central role in supporting the growth of our turnkey EV charging infrastructure business unit based in Coventry. 

In this position the successful applicant will be responsible for developing accurate, competitive, and compliant cost estimates for projects ranging from commercial charging hubs to large-scale public and private EV infrastructure including new grid connections up to 33kV. 

The ideal candidate combines strong technical understanding of the electrical & construction industry with commercial awareness and the ability to collaborate across engineering, procurement, and project delivery teams.


Principal Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Estimating & Tender Preparation

  • Develop detailed cost estimates for turnkey EV charging infrastructure projects, including LV, HV (11/33kV), and civil construction elements.

  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, DNO/ICP requirements, and client documentation to produce accurate BOQs and pricing schedules.

  • Prepare tender submissions, cost breakdowns, risk registers, and supporting documentation.

  • Liaise with suppliers, subcontractors, and OEMs to obtain competitive quotations and verify technical compliance.

  • Analyse tender addendums, clarifications, and design updates to maintain accurate estimates.


Technical & Commercial Input

  • Assess grid connection requirements, including contestable and non‑contestable works, substations, switchgear, transformers, metering, and cable routes.

  • Evaluate construction methodologies, installation approaches, and sequencing to ensure realistic labour and material allowances.

  • Identify value engineering opportunities and alternative technical solutions to enhance competitiveness.

  • Support development of project budgets, cost plans, and cashflow forecasts for awarded projects.


Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with engineering, design, and project management teams to align estimates with deliverable project scope.

  • Engage with specialist subcontractors to clarify commercial and technical requirements for pricing.

  • Participate in internal commercial review meetings and present cost summaries, risks, and key assumptions.


Risk, Compliance & Quality

  • Ensure all estimates comply with relevant standards and regulations (e.g., NERS, BS7671, ENA standards, CDM).

  • Identify commercial, technical, and programme risks, proposing mitigation strategies where needed.

  • Maintain accurate records of pricing data, supplier quotations, assumptions, and revisions.


Essential Experience

  • Estimator background in electrical contracting, utilities, or HV/LV infrastructure.

  • Strong understanding of 11kV/33kV networks, substations, and civil engineering interfaces.

  • Experience estimating EV charging, renewable energy, or grid‑connected projects.

  • Ability to read technical drawings and specifications.

  • Strong numerical, analytical, and commercial skills.

  • Proficient with estimating software and Excel.


Desirable

  • Experience with DNO/ICP frameworks or contestable works.

  • Knowledge of trenching, ducting, foundations, and reinstatement.

  • Understanding of EV charger technologies and system architecture.

  • HNC/HND/Degree in engineering or construction.
